Opting for the poor is not a project or an assignment.
It is a call, a vocation, a way of life! Is it yours?

Care Through Touch Series

Beginning this fall, we are offering more possibilities for people to explore the healing power of CARING THROUGH TOUCH! Each one-day workshop will focus on a different part of the body from a massage perspective as well as a social and spiritual perspective.

Our certificate training programs prepare participants to offer chair massage and compassionate support in drop-in-centers, shelters, healthcare clinics, etc. This series includes the basics of that training as well as ways of adapting it to meet the needs of at-risk and isolated seniors living in shelters, SRO hotels or low income housing units here in the Tenderloin, and in nursing homes and long-term care facilities in one’s own communities.

Care Through Touch consists of 3 C’s: caring presence, comforting touch and compassionate support. In these workshops we will:

  • Learn a variety of touch modalities, pressures, rhythms and gentle holdings
  • Discuss the challenges of various living environments
  • Reflect on the physical and mental health conditions of elderly clients
  • Learn ways of tapping into their deeper spiritual quests for purpose and meaning

These workshops will be days of both learning and retreat. Caring through touch is above all a spiritual practice: a ‘work of mercy,’ an ‘act of kindness,’ and the ‘art of compassion’ that nourishes oneself and flows out to embrace all beings - old and young, poor and rich, stranger or friend.

Hand Massage Workshop "The Art of Comforting"

Saturday, September 17, 2016

The benefits of a relaxing and therapeutic hand massage for oneself and others are plentiful. Physically, massage relieves pain, increases mobility and improves circulation. Mentally, it eases anxiety, stress and tension. Emotionally, it evokes a sense of comfort and connection. Spiritually, it deepens our capacity for kindness, generosity and compassion.

In this retreat-style workshop, you will learn ways to connect with yourself and others that are intimate, comforting, helpful and holy. We will examine the physical and spiritual anatomy of the hand, learn self-massage techniques that benefit our own hands, and practice ways of massaging the hands of friends and family, colleagues, the ill, the poor, the elderly, and the dying.

Workshop Cost $50
