My very first massage partner at the Barbara McInnis House said, “I can feel all the bad going out,” as I did the waterfall stroke on her arm. There was a real sense of awe and wonder in her voice and in her face.

I work in an area of Vancouver much like the Tenderloin. Sheila watched for months before she asked for a massage. Afterwards she said, “I am terrified of being touched. I was abused as a child. But this is healing me. I even felt some peace. I am amazed at myself!”
Robyn, whose daughter was recently murdered by her boyfriend in an SRO said, “This massage is my reason for getting up on Tuesday mornings. I can feel the stress wash away from my body.”
Mariah, at a drug recovery, wrote the following after her first massage: “Words cannot fully describe what you did for me. I never had anyone touch me in a comfortable manner in life. Your hands did not strike me or hurt me. At first I wanted to cry (and I did) but then I allowed myself to let go and I felt the light and was not afraid of it. I said a silent prayer for you. I will never forget that in this world one person touched me without hurting me or wanting something from me. I am so overwhelmed. I felt a gift from God today.”
For me, the meaning of Eucharist has deepened with Care Through Touch massage. Meeting another in mutual brokenness and vulnerability, I touch and am touched by the Body of Christ. Together, we are healed, held in all-embracing communion with All.

Care Through Touch is a way of being that is never separate from me. Care Through Touch gave me the confidence to be fully present to people in whatever way they need to be! At present it is my privilege to be present in the “thin-time” of people’s living and dying…to anticipate need, pain, and to be present to people as they breathe their last breaths. Care Through Touch is a way of life…a way of being.
